Conflict-sensitive GESI analysis for the Gashaan project
Bodhi is conducting a conflict-sensitive Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) analysis for CARE International's GASHAAN project, a 5-year initiative aimed at strengthening protection systems and services to better prevent, mitigate, and respond to protection risks, particularly gender-based violence (GBV) and child abuse. This project addresses the protection needs of women, men, girls, and boys in vulnerable and high-need communities in Banadir, Hirshabelle, South West, Jubaland, and Galmudug. The analysis focuses on understanding gender inequality in Somalia, especially in the project areas, examining gender norms, roles, and responsibilities, social inclusion (particularly clan membership), and factors exacerbating gender inequality, including the differentiated impacts of climate change and conflict on different social groups. It also assesses the extent of social, political, and economic exclusion of minorities and other vulnerable groups, existing protection systems, barriers to participation in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and the integration of GESI into national and international development policies in Somalia. Bodhi employs a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The research includes a comprehensive desk review, Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and participatory Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). This approach ensures that the experiences and perspectives of all project stakeholders, including refugees, host communities, and marginalised groups, are fully integrated into the analysis. The GESI analysis aims to provide practical, actionable recommendations to enhance the protection outcomes of the GASHAAN project. By adopting a gender-sensitive, inclusive, and conflict-sensitive approach, Bodhi ensures that the analysis contributes to more effective and equitable protection systems and services in the target regions.
