Research on Climate Change and Insecurity Nexus in the Border Regions of Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia

Deris Wanaag

Bodhi conducted formative research examining the complex intersections between climate change, security dynamics, and pastoral mobility in the Garissa-Afmadow border region between Kenya and Somalia. The study focused on understanding how climate stresses interacted with evolving security landscapes and local conflict dynamics, particularly analysing the impact on pastoral communities' resource management strategies and mobility patterns. Through mixed-methods research, we examined how border security operations affected traditional adaptation mechanisms while also investigating the role of non-state armed actors in exploiting climate vulnerabilities. The research generated novel insights into climate-security dynamics in an understudied yet strategically significant border region, providing evidence-based recommendations for climate adaptation and conflict prevention strategies.
