Urban contextual analysis of extreme poverty in Freetown, Sierra Leone

Concern Worldwide

Bodhi conducted an urban contextual analysis of extreme poverty in Freetown, employing a political economy approach to DFID's sustainable livelihoods framework. The project aimed to comprehend extreme poverty in Freetown, with particular emphasis on disaster risk in the city's informal settlements. We analysed how social and political networks interact with indicators of urban poverty, examining how these networks either facilitate or limit access to improved incomes, assets, services, and employment opportunities in urban areas. Our methodology involved fieldwork in three informal settlements in Freetown. This research culminated in a comprehensive contextual analysis report. Based on our findings, we developed programming options encompassing livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, health, education, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
